Teens, Families, and Community-Based Organizations that serve youth and families are invited to join us for a FREE virtual webinar: “Managing Stress During COVID-19: A Wellness Check-In & Roundtable”.
During this interactive online conversation, we’ll share and discuss practical strategies for stress management and resiliency that African-American teens (and adults) can implement as they navigate life during the COVID-19 pandemic:
- Discuss 2021 goal setting with participants
- Identify and discuss self-care strategies to cope with multi-layers of stress
- Explore the challenges of online learning and to identify ways students can manage these challenges effectively
- Discuss the signs and symptoms of teen suicide and how to respond to self-injurious behaviors
- Identify the relationship between stress and teen alcohol & marijuana use, and prevention strategies
This event is hosted by Get SMART West Balitmore Drug Free Community Coalition and is open for the community to attend. It’s a virtual webinar & ALL are invited to attend from anywhere across the country! Our featured speakers will be Dr. Kizzy Pittrell, Ed.D., LCPC (Licensed Professional Counselor & Mental Health Advocate); Brandon J. Johnson, MHS, MCHES (Suicide Prevention Advocate & Public Health Advisor); Victoria Beard, M.A. (Physics Teacher / STEM Educator); and Chenire Carter (Creative & Event Planner).

ABOUT DR. KIZZY PITTRELL
Dr. Kizzy Pittrell, Ed.D. is a graduate of Argosy University, Washington DC from the Counseling Psychology program. Dr. Pittrell received her Masters of Counseling from Towson University and Bachelors of Science in Psychology from Bowie State University. Dr. Pittrell is a Licensed Professional Counselor, an Approved Drug and Alcohol counselor, an Master Addiction Counselor, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Maryland. Dr. Pittrell has worked in the community sector providing mental health and addiction counseling and treatment to adults and adolescents for 14 years. Currently, Dr. Pittrell is owner of Ross Counseling, a private practice providing therapy to individuals, families and couples and manages a community mental health facility in Baltimore. More recently, Dr. Pittrell along with her husband opened a psychiatric rehabilitation program in Baltimore county called Strengthening Families Building Communities. Dr. Pittrell is passionate about educating the community about mental health and reducing the stigma of mental health. She is also an author of a children’s book about maternal depression. ABOUT BRANDON J. JOHNSON
Brandon J. Johnson, M.H.S., MCHES is a tireless advocate for positive mental health and suicide prevention services for youth and adults across the country and within the local community of Baltimore, MD. He is a subject matter expert in suicide prevention, with a particular focus on suicide prevention planning and suicide prevention strategies for Black youth. Brandon earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Morgan State University in 2008 and a Master of Health Science Degree from Johns Hopkins University in 2012. In 2020, Brandon earned the Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) credential from the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing. Brandon is the creator of “The Black Mental Wellness Lounge,” a YouTube channel dedicated to discussing Black mental health and healing. Another highlight of Brandon’s career is his current role as the Co-Lead of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention’s Faith Communities Task Force. Previously, Brandon served as the Director of Suicide and Violence Prevention for the State of Maryland where he worked in communities throughout the state to help develop strategies to end violence in various forms, such as community violence and human trafficking. ABOUT VICTORIA BEARD
Victoria Beard is a Baltimore native who loves to call Charm City her home. She possesses a broad range of professional development, leadership, and instructional experiences as an educator. Currently, she serves as a Secondary Physics Teacher in the District of Columbia Public School System. Ms. Beard has been an educator for 19 years. She has served students in the Baltimore City Public School System for 17 years. Ms. Beard has spent the last year and a half servicing the diverse student population D.C. in both the charter and traditional school settings. She has taught students from elementary, middle, and now high school grade levels. Throughout her 19-year career, Ms. Beard has served the school community in a multitude of ways. To name a few, she served as a Parent’s Math Lab Instructor, Chair of the School Improvement Team, Math Representative, Lead Teacher, Department Chair, Instructional Leadership Team member and even led professional development sessions for educators in reading and math instruction. Her dedication and commitment to education is evident in her passion for mentoring novice teachers, writing curriculum to support educators across the district and volunteering on the Maryland State Gifted and Talented Education Board.
